FAQ
1. What type of variation should I expect with Origins clay tiles?
Tonal variation is a natural characteristic of handmade clay tile and part of what gives Origins its distinctive, artisanal appeal. Differences in shade and color are to be expected, and some tiles within the same color batch may display more noticeable variation than others. Please refer to the product description for the designated variation level (low, medium, high).
Images are intended to be representative but may not capture the full range of variation. If your project calls for a highly uniform, consistent glazed tile, Origins may not be the best fit.
2. What type of finish do Origins clay tiles have?
Each Origins clay tile is finished with a colored liquid enamel that is applied by hand, creating its signature glossy surface. The tiles are then fired in kilns at temperatures exceeding 1050°C, a process that defines both the final color and the subtle texture of the glaze.
Thanks to this enameled finish, Origins clay tiles are easy to clean, as liquids naturally bead and run off the surface.
3. Are Origins clay tiles suitable for heavy traffic areas?
Origins clay tiles are suitable for heavy traffic areas when installed on walls. However, they are not recommended for floor applications that experience heavy foot traffic. Their handcrafted nature makes them ideal for interior wall applications, where their artisanal character can be fully appreciated.
4. Do you offer trims for Origins clay tiles?
Yes — a 3” x 20” bullnose base is available, as well as a glazed edge trim.
Bullnose edge
The edge is fully rounded. This is the most robust and protective option, ideal for visible edges, benches, bar fronts, steps, etc.
Glazed edge
We can glaze the edge, either on the short side or the long side, depending on the application and design. This is often used when the tile edge remains visible and needs a finished look.
5. How will my sample compare to my actual order?
Origins is a handcrafted product and natural variation is part of its beauty. Differences in color, shade, and size can occur from tile to tile and between production batches (kiln loads), so it is unlikely that your sample will be an exact match to the material you receive with your full order.
If you are seeking a highly uniform, consistent appearance, Origins may not be the ideal choice. These tiles are designed to celebrate organic texture and subtle variation, creating a more artisanal, one-of-a-kind installation.
6. How should I install Origins clay tiles?
It is recommended to follow industry standards for installing our glazed clay tiles. The preparation of the substrate, the correct choice of adhesives and grout according to the type of tile, and the conditions of each project will be crucial for a long-lasting installation. Origins clay tiles can be laid using the method normally used for laying tiles, with mortar, adhesives and grout for application on walls.
Additionally, our Origins clay tiles do not require sealing as they are already double glazed by us.
See our full installation guide here.
7. What is the recommended grout for Origins clay tiles?
The recommended width for grouting joints is 1 to 4 mm and may vary to suit the alignment of each tile with other adjacent tiles or other structural elements. It is important to keep in mind the color of the joint as it should match the color of the selected tile. It can also be highlighted, if desired, with a contrasting color border for the joint. In order to give the appearance of a connection between the tiles, it is recommended that a joint of the same or similar shade to the tiles is laid.
8. Can I use Origins clay tiles for exterior applications?
Yes, these tiles can be used on exterior applications, provided they are installed correctly.
Origins clay tiles perform very well outdoors in mild climates without heavy frost.
Proper installation is essential: suitable adhesives, correct slopes for drainage, and appropriate grouting.
Natural terracotta will show more patina over time outdoors, while glazed finishes offer easier maintenance and higher stain resistance.
9. How do I care for Origins clay tiles?
Origins clay tiles are virtually maintenance free and require little care other than regular cleaning. To ensure lasting beauty and performance we recommend the following:
- For daily cleaning, simply use a natural, neutral PH detergent diluted in warm water.
- To remove stubborn stains or clean joints, use a stiff natural bristle brush.
- Always avoid using abrasive cleaning products containing bleach, ammonia or paint thinner.
- Never scrub with rough materials such as hard brushes or steel sponges as they will damage the surface.
- In kitchen areas and around the kitchen itself, worktops and the backs of worktops, oil stains that may fall on the tiles should be wiped off immediately to prevent them from darkening the tiles.
10. How much overage is recommended?
We always recommend ordering at least 15% overage to account for potential breakage during shipping, (as well as future repairs or on-site cuts).
